Nature has been inspiring architecture and design for centuries, and there’s something truly spectacular when our favorite elements of the outdoors transcend their usual contexts and appear in our favorite designs. Especially in the barren winter months, incorporating nature-inspired pieces into the home allows us to retain our connection with the beauty and energy of the outdoors. This week, we’re showcasing five designs influenced by botany and nature to elevate and inspire your space.
LAMELLA
Hallgeir Homstvedt & Jonah Takagi
Airy and lightweight, Lamella was specifically inspired by the delicate pleats on the underside of mushroom caps, which are also commonly known as lamella—and while not the most obvious inspiration for a suspension lamp, the result is simply beautiful. Produced by 75-year-old design manufacturer Le Klint, the pleated lampshade—the brand’s signature— is a unique handicraft that is only mastered at Le Klint’s original Pleating Studio in Odense, Denmark. To become a skilled pleating technician at Le Klint takes approximately three years, and most of the artisans in the pleating studio have been with the company for more than 25 years. Available in four sizes.
PETAL DINING
BassamFellows
With each release, BassamFellows continues to impress us and push the envelope when it comes to solid wood design. In the Petal dining chair, we find the most advanced 3D-molded wood veneer chair ever put into commercial production. Innovative, ergonomic, and stylish, Petal’s gorgeous and unexpected silhouette establishes a design that genuinely feels new, like something we haven’t seen before—and we just can’t get enough of it. The entire silhouette is reminiscent of the chair’s clear influence, as well as its namesake—flower petals. Additionally, both the materials and manufacturing processes are sustainable and environmentally friendly, allowing you to feel even better when introducing this magnificent design to your dining space.
FLOWERPOT PENDANT
Verner Panton
Flowers have influenced virtually every medium of the creative arts throughout history, so it’s no surprise that yet another florally-inclined design would make its way onto our list. The Flowerpot Pendant is an elegant lamp, whose era of conception—the 1960s—feels strongly evident in every aspect of the design. Sleek, vibrant, and chic, the Flowerpot Pendant is available in a stunning array of vivid colors, allowing the lamp to cater to your personal taste preferences, whether as a vehicle for introducing a pop of color, or providing consistency by working within a room’s color palette. Ideal for a number of settings, whether enhancing the comforts of your own home or brightening the interior of a restaurant, these pendants double as decor and lighting pieces.
LEAF LOUNGE
Lievore, Altherr, Molina
A vision of nature is translated directly into a design concept in the Leaf Lounge, a contemporary lounge chair that displays an irregular design reminiscent of the branches of a tree or the veins in a leaf. Nostalgic and forward-thinking all at once, the chair’s simplicity of form and ease of application encourage creative inclusion in diverse environments, both inside and outside, as the design is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The painted steel rods give subtle allusions to the pleasing irregularities of nature and create a powerful impact, especially when placed in settings where greenery can be observed, allowing Leaf Lounge to serve as a connector between the real and the metaphorical.
PEBBLES VASE
Kate Hume
One of Kate Hume’s earliest designs, Pebbles is the perfect accessory to add color and personality to a space while simultaneously incorporating an enticing, smooth texture. Made entirely of sleek, mouth-blown glass, Pebbles’ silhouette is gentle and flowing, exhibiting a tastefulness and sophistication that quietly transforms its environment. With an emphasis on jewel-tone colors, the Pebble vase is stunning when featured alone, but even more so when shown in groups, allowing the play of shadows and layered colors between the forms to make a strong statement. Available in lime green, turquoise, night blue, bottle green, gold, cognac, dark grey green, and aubergine.
