Born in Copenhagen in 1902, Arne Jacobsen’s legacy has a design footprint unlike any other. For more than half of the twentieth century, Jacobsen’s ideas shaped the landscape of Danish design, with an impact that would last for decades and influence furniture design and architecture in virtually every part of the globe. Jacobsen’s designs, in addition to being timeless works of art themselves, played an unequivocal role in establishing a worldwide understanding of what constitutes stylish, modern design, with characteristics, motifs, and creative expressions that remain even more prominent now than ever before. It is not an exaggeration to say that without Arne Jacobsen, the design world today would be an entirely different place—and this week, it is our pleasure to share five of his most iconic designs, all available at SUITE NY.

The Egg™ Chair is one of history’s most well-known designs, a chair that epitomizes quintessential Danish design sensibilities while highlighting Jacobsen’s enduring creative spirit. Initially designed for the lobby and reception areas in the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Egg™ chair draws from Jacobsen’s architectural expertise as well as his dynamic understanding of functional design. Because of the unique shape, the Egg™ guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces and is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as for the home.

Another design born out of a specific commissioned project, Lily™ was designed in 1968 for the Danish National Bank. The chair’s curvaceous silhouette, wide shoulders, and slim waist are a beautiful example of how Jacobsen constantly explored and challenged the possibilities of veneer, creating gorgeous designs that were brought to life through innovative shapes and characteristics. Graceful and pure, the Swan™ Chair is a flowing, elegant design, utilizing only curves without any straight lines, originally designed for the lobby and lounge areas at the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958. Jacobsen was commissioned to design every element of the hotel, including the furniture, yielding several timeless designs and further solidifying his inimitable place in design history. This iconic chair is consistently stylish, and feels appropriate in spaces that emulate trends from all decades between the late 1950s and today. 

Who would’ve thought a design inspired by a teardrop could evoke so much joy? The Drop™ chair was originally produced alongside the archetypal Swan™ and Egg™ chairs for the interior of the SAS Royal Hotel, exclusively in a limited edition for the hotel's bar and lobby. Decades later, in 2014, this stunning design was relaunched by Fritz Hansen, and we could not be more thrilled.
