Innovative and beautiful designs have the potential to truly move us—and sometimes, the designs themselves move, as well! Just because a design is functional does not mean it has to be stagnant; in fact, some of our favorite designs are incredibly dynamic in nature, as movement and interaction are often core components in what makes a design special. This week, we’re highlighting five interactive and innovative pieces that provide an experience in and of themselves.

AYNO FLOOR LAMP
Stefan Diez

Ayno aims to redefine the boundaries of adjustable lighting, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. The defining feature of the Ayno light is a fiberglass rod, which is stretched to the bow by the cable; the inherent tension of the rod allows the lamp to function without any joints—by sliding the two adjustment rings at top and bottom, the fiberglass rod is bent into the desired position and the light is directed wherever illumination is needed. While the physics are relatively simple, the result is extraordinarily innovative. Ayno meets all requirements of design, technology and sustainability, and was nominated for the 2021 German Sustainability Award Design. Textile cable available in neon orange or black.

ROCKING CHAIR
Dan Svarth

Dan Svarth's Rocking Chair was designed to resemble a traditional deck chair, but with a rocking capability, adding an entirely new dimension that isn’t discernible at first glance. Svarth's architecture background allowed him to design a chair with joints which are based on how weight is distributed when the body is seated, creating a chair whose comfort is mathematically undeniable. Featuring appealing geometric angles while showcasing the beauty and versatility of natural wood, the Rocking Chair exhibits masterful Danish craftsmanship in every way. Frame in ash with seat in printed canvas. Immediate availability.

GUEST BED
Hertel Klarhoefer Industrial Design

By now, Zeitraum’s commitment to functional, elegant, and high quality design is understood without question. In keeping with these values, the Guest Bed is a wonderfully contemporary solution: the perfect bed for visiting guests, or in your vacation home. Two beds stack without any fixings or hardware, and also form a comfortable couch during the daytime. The design’s symmetry, minimalism, and geometric qualities allow the Guest Bed to feel visually pleasing and harmonious in any space. When the extra bed is needed, simply unfold the frame—everything you needed was already there. Available in three sizes with wood frame available in beech, maple, oak, knotty oak, cherry, American walnut, and European walnut.

PINWHEEL
Hvidt & Mølgaard

A masterpiece in every way, Pinwheel is a unique and unexpected design concept—a modular table. Named after the children’s toy, where a wheel of paper spins around an axle, it draws inspiration from this playful example of geometric design. As such, Pinwheel is composed of six smaller tables that are purchased individually. Slot them together, however, and they cleverly form one shield-shaped piece. Designed to be adaptable, this table can be creatively refashioned to suit all sorts of living arrangements: Pinwheel can exist as several bijou tables placed throughout the home, utilized together as a console, or even configured into the shape of a snake or a flower. Tap into your own creativity, and the possibilities are truly endless.

XSIT
Erik Magnussen

Interactive by nature, folding chairs are the epitome of convenience and functionality—and thus, Xsit was born. Xsit is a simple, practical and comfortable folding chair, perfectly suited for museums, galleries, classrooms, and other public spaces, or as an extra chair in the contemporary home. Xsit's natural leather seat contrasts strikingly against its sleek chrome frame, giving this minimalist folding chair a uniquely modern edge. Xsit is eye-catching on its own, but works exceptionally well in environments that feature other Engelbrechts designs.
