At SUITE NY, we’re always searching for refreshing, innovative takes on design—so naturally, we were immediately drawn to Design Editions. Created by award-winning, Danish designer Mikal Harrsen of MA/U Studio, the intention behind Design Editions is to fill a unique but prominent gap in the market—wall decor that is eye-catching and artistic, but not generic or stereotypical. Design Editions’ collection finds itself mid-way between a design object and an art piece—essentially, design that functions as art—made intentionally to adorn your walls, and produced in limited editions to ensure that every piece is a rarity. This week, we’re highlighting five of our favorite Design Editions pieces.
SKYSCRAPER
Mikal Harrsen
Dark, moody, and textural. Crafted from treated black iron sheets produced by DeCastelli, Skyscraper evokes the feeling of a stormy night sky, with endless depth and enticing hues. Whether displayed singularly, as a dyptich, or as a quadryptich, Skyscraper is capable of setting the tone within a room, and entirely transforming your interior. The design itself contrasts beautifully against the sleek, anodized aluminum frame, establishing a sleek design that instantly modernizes the surrounding environment. Harrsen clarifies: “Essential materials and repetition is often present in my designs. Skyscraper is a geometric interplay that resembles a braided surface reminiscent of collapsing windows and facades on a high-rise building.”
PHENOMENA COLOR
Keiji Takeuchi
In Phenomena Color, blocks of solid anodized aluminum are CNC-milled at different frequencies to create subtly angled panels that reflect light and color in endless variations depending on the position of the viewer and time of day, a technique which emphasizes the unique properties of the material. This piece is a magnificent tool for adding a pop of color in a way that feels sophisticated and unexpected. Designer Keiji Takeuchi describes his process: “I explore the potential of aluminum beyond its functional use. My research led me to traditional Japanese folding screens – byōbu – that served as both a furnishing and decorative element.”
GEOMETRY
Mikal Harrsen
Mikal Harrsen has described Geometry as the initial inspiration behind what would later develop into Design Editions’ entire concept. Instead of using paper to engage the intellect in a conventional manner, Geometry focuses on the subtle interactions of matter and form, disregarding the prescribed role of paper as a medium for writing, drawing, and painting. The result is subdued, unassuming, yet incredible engaging, serving as a reminder that even in simplicity and minimalism, tremendous depth and creativity is possible. As explained by Harrsen: “By refraining from writing or drawing on the paper, a kind of silence almost prevails. By avoiding these manipulations and instead turning the paper into shapes and compositions, something unexpected comes forth. It is as if the material begins to tell its own story.”
TERRACOTTA
Omi Tahara
The earthen, organic, Terracotta collection by Omi Tahara offers a profoundly beautiful motif, available in three different shapes. The material is textural and dynamic, characterized by the rich, clay-colored hues of Cotto Lombardo stone, handcrafted in a family-run factory which has been producing the material since the 15th century. Each piece feels current and contemporary, and can easily be envisioned in a range of environments—entryways, lounges, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms—which speaks to the astounding versatility of the collection. Tahara elaborates: “I wanted to reaffirm the value of terracotta. Design Editions offers an opportunity to explore the nature of materials in a new context. I selected terracotta for its warmth and the way it beautifully contrasts with the industrially produced aluminum frame.”
FRAGMENT OF A SPIRAL
Studiocharlie
In Fragment of a Spiral, rattan cane is removed from its typical contexts and manipulated into a mesmerizing circular shape. The unique juxtaposition of rattan cane, nylon cord, and aluminum frame establish a distinct relationship between all materials, all serving the ultimate purpose of allowing the rattan spiral to take centerstage. In explaining their philosophy, Studiocharlie has managed to perfectly explain the ethos behind this design: “Objects have the power to make us feel better or worse, to make our life more complicated or more fulfilled. We design objects that surprise via their essential quality and which reveal a precise thought beyond their simplicity.” Available with white or black background.
