In the hands of a skilled maker, wood becomes more than material. It becomes an agent of care, of craft, of origin. This week, we explore five designs that reflect a deep respect for natural forests and thoughtful sourcing. From Nordic pines to Appalachian hardwoods, these pieces speak quietly but powerfully to their beginnings, shaped by designers and makers committed to working in harmony with nature.

001 DINING CHAIR
Fredrik Paulsen
Vaarnii works exclusively with Finnish pine, a humble species transformed into bold, sculptural furniture. The 001 Dining Chair is as solid as it is expressive, with thick planks, softened edges, and a profile that feels grounded and elemental. The wood’s rich grain tells the story of slow growth in northern forests, shaped into modern form.
BASIC DINING TABLE
Jenni Roininen

Designed for everyday life but made with extraordinary care, the Basic table from Nikari is crafted in Finland using certified solid ash or oak. The design extends effortlessly, supporting both intimate meals and larger gatherings. With roots in the traditions of Nordic woodworking, each table reflects Nikari’s long-standing dedication to sustainability and small-scale craftsmanship.

POLLOCK TABLES
Dan Pollock

Each sculptural table from Southern California-based woodworker Dan Pollock is carved by hand from naturally fallen trees and salvaged wood. No two are alike. With raw edges, hollowed curves, and visible knots, these tables feel like relics from the forest floor, made smooth and functional through human touch. A singular expression of nature’s irregular beauty.

ZENSO LOUNGE
Formstelle

The Zenso Lounge Chair pairs graceful curves with architectural strength. Zeitraum’s dedication to natural materials is evident in the finely joined solid wood frame, available in oak or walnut from sustainably managed sources. The result is a lounge chair that feels both rooted and refined, inviting long conversation or quiet reflection.

EDDA CREDENZA
Norm Architects
A study in proportion and restraint, the Edda Credenza designed by Norm Architects balances architectural weight with refined minimalism. Crafted in West Virginia from solid walnut, white oak, or ash, its design features exaggerated overhangs, rhythmic uprights, and recessed doors that bring clarity to the structure’s form. Available in multiple sizes and fitted with concealed cable management, Edda is both sculptural and quietly functional.
