Known for its durability, richness, and ability to patina beautifully over time, leather remains one of the most iconic materials in design. Whether used structurally or as a soft, tactile surface, leather adds depth and refinement. This week, we highlight five designs that explore the material in distinct and unexpected ways.
SCARPA 925 LOUNGE
Afra & Tobia Scarpa

Designed in 1966, the Scarpa 925 Lounge Chair features a sculptural wood frame with a suspended, saddle-stitched leather seat. The anatomical design of the leather-covered seat, combined with the natural elasticity of the cantilevered backrest, creates a lounge chair that is equally comfortable and elegant. Produced in Italy, the design exemplifies a refined, architectural use of leather.

TRE 3
Angelo Mangiarotti
A true showstopper, Tre 3 is instantly identifiable by its three rectangular legs and topstitched leather sling seat. Made from solid wood with a hand-upholstered leather seat, the design is quiet yet sophisticated. The saddle leather adds a smooth, supportive surface and a tactile layer of luxury to the architectural frame.
CB-311 LEATHER DESK
Craig Bassam and Scott Fellows
The CB-311 Desk pairs solid wood with a thick, vegetable-tanned leather writing surface, creating a tactile and elegant workspace. The leather is stitched and wrapped by hand, offering a contrast to the precise wood joinery. Refined and elegant, the desk showcases the material’s ability to patina gracefully with repeated use while maintaining its original character.
DAN SVARTH SOFA
Dan Svarth
Designed in 2018, this sofa by Danish architect Dan Svarth is a study in precision and material elegance. A key feature is its use of leather: Each panel is cut from a single hide, allowing for a seamless and uninterrupted expression of the material’s natural beauty. The leather upholstery is supple yet structured, offering comfort without compromising the sofa’s tailored form. A sustainably sourced mahogany frame outlines the silhouette, creating a striking contrast between the warm wood and rich leather. Also available as a three-seater.

ADNET COFFEE TABLE
Jacques Adnet
Originally designed in the 1950s, the Adnet Coffee Table blends the elegance of French modernism with equestrian detail. The circular glass top is set within a stitched, full-grain leather-wrapped steel frame with brass accents, highlighting Adnet’s signature combination of materials. Both functional and decorative, the table speaks to the timeless appeal of finely crafted leatherwork.
